IIT Delhi, one the top engineering colleges of India, is planning to start a 4 year Undergraduate course in Product Design from 2018-19 batch by establishing a School of Design. The admission to the programme is expected to be through a separate entrance test (UCEED) conducted by IIT Mumbai. Going by the statement of IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao to PTI, it is likely that the course shall be open to students of all streams in 10+2, and not just the Science students. The decision comes in light of the growing demand for the course, which was started by IIT Mumbai a few years ago.  The proposal has been approved by the IIT Senate and is expected to be placed before the Board of Governors soon. Currently, IIT Delhi offers a Master of Design course but has only faculty members and a limited intake.

"Be it machines or gadgets, what is inside is what engineers design. But for instance, a phone, how should the case be, how should it look like, where and how the buttons should be, this is not something a technocrat can work better upon and there is a need for someone who specialises in product design," IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao told PTI.

"For the B.Design there is a separate entrance test (UCEED) in the country and we will be a part of it. Of course, for creative designs you cannot test one on concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Maths but on the ability of creative thinking which is not an engineer's domain," he said.
